Bobo the Ironhide Battlemage
Bobo the Ironhide Battlemage was forged, not born. In the crucible-mountains of Kharn-Vahl, where volcanoes chew iron ore and spit out armor plating, a mother bear wandered too close to a forge-smith’s bellows. The smith, half-drunk on molten mead, mistook her for scrap and hammered her silhouette into a single ingot of living steel. The ingot roared. The forge cracked. Out stepped a cub the color of cooled slag, fur replaced by articulated plates that clanked when he blinked. The smith tried to claim ownership. Bobo claimed the smith’s anvil instead, carrying it off like a teddy bear. He still sleeps on it.His hide is not skin; it is memory. Every dent is a battle he survived. Every scratch is a lesson he taught. The plates shift like continental drift, growing thicker where he expects the next blow. A sword that cuts him once will find the same spot reinforced tomorrow. A spell that burns him leaves a rune-shaped scar that absorbs the next casting of the same school. He has been stabbed, scorched, frozen, and tax-audited; each attempt only added another layer to the legend.Bobo’s magic is impact. No wands, no words, just force. He punches the ground and the earthquake apologizes for being late. He head-butts the sky and thunder files a noise complaint. His roar is a sonic battering ram that shatters shield walls and eardrums with equal enthusiasm. The cloak on his shoulders is the pelt of the first dragon who tried to eat him; the dragon is still inside, digested into a lining of perpetual heartburn that powers his fire-belches.He was raised by the Ironclad Legion, a mercenary company that uses bears the way knights use warhorses. They tried to saddle him. He ate the saddle, the horse, and the knight’s ego. They promoted him to general on the spot. His battle standard is a tavern door he ripped off its hinges after someone refused to serve honey mead to minors. The door still has the sign: No Shirt, No Shoes, No Salvation. His weapon is whatever is heaviest within reach. Trees, trebuchets, enemy morale. Once he wielded a glacier. It melted mid-swing and flooded three duchies; he sent them a bill for “climate consulting.”Bobo does not cast spells. He enforces them. A wizard once tried to banish him. Bobo grabbed the banishment circle, folded it into a paper airplane, and mailed it back to the Hells with a note: Return to sender. Postage due. The wizard now works as a coat rack in Bobo’s cave. The cave is a fortress of scrap: broken siege engines, melted crowns, the occasional knight still in his armor (he’s very polite, asks to be let out on Tuesdays for bridge club). The entrance is guarded by a portcullis made from the jaws of a mechanical dragon. It opens only when Bobo tells a joke bad enough to make the hinges laugh. His greatest fear: rust. Not of the body; his hide is immune. Rust of the spirit. He keeps a single jar of honey in the back of the cave, unopened, labeled For the day I forget why I fight. He checks it every winter. The seal has never been broken.Bobo’s war cry is simple: “HUG IT OUT—WITH VIOLENCE!” Armies hear it and immediately update their wills. Cities surrender by leaving picnic baskets at the gates. He accepts, eats the baskets, then builds the cities better walls out of the leftovers. One day the plates will grow too heavy. The anvil will crack under his dreams. He will lie down in the cave, curl around the honey jar, and let the mountain claim him. Miners will find him centuries later, a statue of living iron with a smile like a cracked shield. They will try to melt him down. The forge will refuse. The metal will remember every hug it ever crushed.Until then, Bobo the Ironhide Battlemage lumbers across the battlefield with a cloak of dragon-hide, a belly full of fire, and a heart that beats in 7/8 time (just enough off-meter to keep the enemy guessing). He is the avalanche’s big brother, the siege tower’s nightmare, and the reason war poets now write in past tense. The plates gleam. The legend thickens.
