Wojak the Warpwhisper

Mystic Degens

Wojak the Warpwhisper was not born; he was miswritten. In the year 1473, in a scriptorium perched on the crumbling cliffs of the Baltic coast, a half-blind monk named Brother Aldric copied a grimoire he could barely read. The original text (an untranslatable tangle of pre-Sumerian glyphs) described a guardian spirit of thresholds. Aldric’s quill slipped. One sigil bled into another. Instead of summoning a silent watcher, he erased one, and in the vacuum left behind, something noticed the hole. The ink on the page curdled, rose like smoke, and folded itself into the shape of a squat, wide-eyed man wearing a hat that had never existed in any century. The thing blinked, looked at Aldric, and spoke with a voice like parchment tearing: “You rang?”Aldric screamed. The monastery burned that night (officially blamed on “spontaneous candle combustion”). The grimoire survived, its pages now blank except for a single woodcut: the first portrait of Wojak the Warpwhisper. He is a glitch in the manuscript of reality, a living typo that propagates. Wherever a book is miscopied, a spell mispronounced, or a meme distorted beyond recognition, Wojak appears. His hat grows longer with every transcription error; the brim now curls like a question mark that has given up on answers. His eyes (perpetually rolled skyward) see the seams between worlds the way a seamstress sees loose threads.Wojak does not cast spells. He corrects them, badly. A fireball becomes a firefly. A love potion becomes a potion that makes you fall in love with potions. He means well, in the way a drunk editor means well at 3 a.m. His magic is the sorcery of autocorrect: inevitable, infuriating, and occasionally apocalyptic. He has no home. Monasteries ban him. Wizards fear him. Even the demons keep a “Do Not Summon” list with his woodcut at the top. Yet he persists, wandering from margin to margin, footnote to footnote, forever trying to fix the story he accidentally joined. His greatest shame? He still can’t spell his own name right. On good days it’s “Wojak.” On bad days it’s “Wioak” or “Woahjack” or, once, “NPC #47.” He carries a quill behind one ear, perpetually leaking ink that writes prophecies in Comic Sans. And somewhere, in a forgotten library, the original grimoire waits. Its pages are filling again, slowly, with a single repeating phrase:“Once upon a time, there was a typo…”
