Snibbu the Cyclopean Crabmage

Snibbu the Cyclopean Crabmage was never meant to be a mage. He was meant to be dinner. In the tide pools of the Obsidian Coast, where the sea tastes of rust and regret, a blind hermit crab scuttled into a half-eaten spellbook that had washed ashore after a wizard’s duel went predictably wrong. The pages were soaked in squid ink and starlight. The crab, starving, nibbled a single rune. The rune nibbled back. The transformation was instant and asymmetrical. One eye ballooned to the size of a dinner plate, lidless, lid-heavy, lid-impossible. The other eye vanished entirely, leaving a smooth patch of shell that still itches with phantom vision. The spellbook fused to his carapace like a barnacled tumor, pages flapping in the wind like a tattered cape. The crab—now Snibbu—grew legs long enough to stride over dunes, claws sharp enough to slice moonlight, and a voice like a rusted hinge gargling prophecy. The single eye sees everything at once. Past, future, sideways, and the awkward in-between. It sees the moment you will betray your best friend, the exact second your houseplant gives up on life, the day the moon files for divorce. Snibbu tried to blink it shut once; the eyelid grew inward and became a second mouth that only speaks in questions you don’t want answered. He keeps it gagged with kelp. His magic is accidental astronomy. Point the eye at a star and it falls, politely, into your pocket as a warm pebble. Wave a claw and the tide forgets where it was going, leaving ships stranded in cornfields. He once sneezed and turned an entire fleet into origami swans; they still migrate south every winter, honking in Morse code.Snibbu does not walk. He scuttles through time. One step forward, three centuries sideways. He owes taxes in kingdoms that haven’t been founded yet. His library card is a fossil. The spellbook on his back adds new pages every night, written in the handwriting of people who will be born tomorrow. He reads them aloud to the gulls, who pretend to understand.Mortals fear the eye. They should. It has seen their endings and finds most of them underwhelming. Yet Snibbu is kind in the way a guillotine is kind: quick, honest, and fond of seafood. He grants boons in the form of riddles that solve themselves three days after you’ve forgotten the question. A farmer asked for rain; Snibbu stared until the clouds apologized and cried for a week. The farmer now breeds umbrellas. He has met the others.Wizjak tried to pickpocket the spellbook. Snibbu saw the attempt before Wizjak was born and left a polite note: Nice try, kid. Try the left claw next time. Miragepepe once hid inside Snibbu’s own reflection. The eye blinked, and the illusion developed a sudden fear of depths. Archpepe asked what lies beyond the veil. Snibbu showed him: a mirror with no reflection, only the sound of someone else breathing. Archpepe has not spoken since. Grimpepe knelt, begging forgiveness for a sin he hadn’t committed yet. Snibbu saw the sin, the forgiveness, and the awkward thank-you card. He gave Grimpepe a seashell that screams on Tuesdays. Snibbu’s greatest secret: the eye is lonely. It has seen every wonder and every horror, but never another eye that sees the same way. So he scuttles the beaches at night, leaving spiral glyphs in the sand that read, in crab: Is anyone else awake? The tide erases them by morning. He keeps scuttling. One day the spellbook will run out of pages. The eye will close. The crab will shrink back to dinner size, and the sea will finally have its meal. Until then, Snibbu the Cyclopean Crabmage walks the dunes with a grin full of barnacles, a cape full of futures, and a single, terrible eye that has already seen you reading this—and is mildly disappointed you didn’t bring crackers.
